When it comes to the most beloved sitcoms of this decade, Fox's New Girl probably immediately comes to mind.
Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, the series debuted in 2011 and quickly gained worldwide popularity. Starring Zooey Deschanel as the charming Jess, New Girl follows Jess's struggles in Los Angeles. Through her weekly adventures, Jess grows up alongside her roommates: Nick (Jake Johnson), Schmidt (Max Greenfield), and Winston (Lamorne Morris). While the plot is simple, it captivated the hearts of millions. New Girl became one of the most talked about series of 2011, and its popularity has only grown since.
For Deschanel and the main cast, New Girl was a career boost, propelling this diverse group to stardom. Although Deschanel has achieved great success in the entertainment industry, starring in projects like Elf and (500) Days of Summer, the actress still misses her old sitcom role. "I miss playing Jessica Day," Deschanel told The AV Club. "I loved playing that character. It was so much fun to be on set every day. What I miss most is the camaraderie with the other actors. I loved working with everyone, and we had such a wonderful scripted show.".

No matter how great the show "New Girl" was, all good things must come to an end. The sitcom concluded in 2018 after seven seasons. Season two has 25 episodes, and season three has 23. Similarly, seasons 4 through 6 each have 22 episodes. However, the final season only has eight episodes.
Why is the final season of the series only eight episodes long? In a 2017 interview with The Daily Beast, Johnson candidly predicted that Season 6 would likely be the end of the Fox sitcom. "Fox isn't telling us [whether the series will be renewed]," the actor told the publication. "But we shot the finale, and if that were the end, the core fan base would be fine with it." However, Season 6 wasn't the end.
Without revealing the series' ending, it's safe to say that New Girl has found a new lease on life, thanks in part to Johnson. "I was one of [the cast] who wrote to them and asked for more," Johnson shared with TVLine. "I said, 'I don't think you gave us enough time to finish the show properly. I would really appreciate—and I think the fans would appreciate—a final goodbye to these characters.'" Thanks to fan support and Johnson's approval, Fox gave the popular series a seventh and final season.

While New Girl's ending was bittersweet, there's a possibility the show could return. In a 2023 interview with the Wall Street Journal, Deschanel expressed her desire to return to Jess's world. "It kind of depends," Deschanel said. "I wouldn't want to spend the rest of my life doing reboots, but I definitely had a great time and would be thrilled to come back.".
As exciting as it would be to see a revival (or reboot) of New Girl, its cast is doing just fine without the franchise. Deschanel joined the third season of Physical on Apple TV+, where she stars alongside series star Rose Byrne. Johnson's career has boomed in recent years—he voiced Peter B. Parker in the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse franchise, starred in Self-Defense, and played the lead role in the Starz comedy Minx.
Greenfield made a splash with her Oscar-winning performances in Promising Young Woman and the underrated romantic comedy Valet. Morris has successfully transitioned to blockbusters, starring in Yesterday, Jumanji: The Next Level, and Bloodshot, starring Vin Diesel, as well as in the fifth season of Fargo alongside Jon Hamm. And what about actress Hannah Simone, who played Cece? She stars in the ABC supernatural sitcom Not Dead Yet and will appear in the 2026 film Supercops 3.
