In the lead-up to the release of A24's horror film "Behind the Scenes," the plot developed by Kain Parsons after his YouTube series became wildly successful in 2022 has been kept largely under wraps. This means that, aside from a few of the film's main stars, we don't yet know exactly who will be playing which roles. So how does young actress Lukita Maxwell figure into this story, and why does she seem familiar?
Let's start with the main point. "Backstage," Parsons's debut feature, draws on creepypasta (essentially a frightening form of internet lore) and utilizes a form of horror known as "borderline horror" to capture the true terror of endless rooms, hallways, and passageways where monsters can lurk around the corner. Critical reviews for the film were quite positive in early May, with /Film's BJ Colangelo noting in her review that the first-time director's film "delivers a suffocating sense of dread." "Backstage" stars Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor ("12 Years a Slave," "The Martian") and fellow nominee Renate Rainswe ("Another Man," "Sentimental Value"). Ejiofor plays Clark, a man who discovers this backstage secret in the basement of his furniture store, and Rainswe plays Dr. Mary Kline, Clark's therapist, who sets out to find her. Maxwell joins Mark Duplass (The Morning Show, Creep) and Finn Bennett (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) in the supporting cast. Maxwell's character, Kat, is one of Clark's employees at the furniture store.

Lukita Maxwell was born in Jakarta, and her family later moved to Utah. Since the fall of 2019, she's been working fairly steadily, landing a role in the sadly short-lived HBO Max series Generation. A teen drama about a group of teenagers attending a California high school, Generation boasted a phenomenal cast, including Maxwell as the young activist Delilah, The Studio star Chase Sui Wonders as the popular Riley, and I Seen TV Glow star Justice Smith as the openly gay student Chester. Sadly, Generation was canceled after one season, but fortunately for Maxwell, her next big opportunity was just around the corner.
Created by Bill Lawrence, Brett Goldstein, and starring Jason Segel, Downsizing is one of Apple TV's sweetest and funniest series... and Maxwell stars as Alice Laird, the teenage daughter of psychotherapist Jimmy (Segel). At the beginning of the series, Alice is dealing with the death of her mother—as is Jimmy—and over the course of the series, she grows close to Jimmy's mentor and colleague, Dr. Paul Rhoades (Harrison Ford), and struggles with navigating life as a young woman who has lost her primary female authority figure.
Besides Generation and Downsizing, you might have seen Maxwell in projects like the 2023 film The Young Wife or her 2024 film African Crisis, but those are by far her most well-known projects… so far.
