«"It's not just that it's an awards ceremony," said the 65-year-old actor, known for the film "» One battle after another »", about the Oscars in a conversation with CNN's Kaitlan Collins on Friday, June 5, during the Tribeca Film Festival, as reported by Variety .
Penn continued, stating that awards ceremonies make him and "too many people" feel "socially uncomfortable." "It would be like this group going to a party after the ceremony and one of them got in," Penn explained. "I've now firmly resolved that I will never, ever go anywhere in my life where I'm in a group of more than eight people.".
Penn added that he felt that at events like this, everyone was given only 15 minutes, which he found alarming and "terrifying.".

Penn revealed what he told his co-stars «One battle after another» , that not attending the ceremony would be "better for my mental health," and instead traveled to the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, to support the country amid the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war, where he accepted another award—an Oscar statuette made from the metal of a train damaged during the war, which was presented to him by Alexander Pertsovsky of Ukrainian Railways on March 17.
«"It was the first time I really enjoyed the Oscars," he said in an interview, describing watching the ceremony from afar. "It was great.".
Penn said he made the decision to stop attending awards shows in person earlier this year. "The best thing I could hope for was relief," Penn continued. "Knowing I wouldn't be doing it anymore, I still went to the ceremony this year. I went to the Golden Globes; I'd never been there before. And then I decided, 'I can't do this anymore.'".

He went on to express his displeasure with fans wanting to take selfies with him during and after award ceremonies.
«"To the people never "You shouldn't take selfies with anyone," Penn said. "It's bad for you; it's bad for everyone. It's soul-sucking. But a Holocaust survivor and her disabled six-year-old, wheeled in? Absolutely not.".
