Details on that amazing reunion of the Summer House cast and what's next: "The situation has changed.".
«"It was so cool to watch the video of people jumping out of their seats, screaming and clapping," host Ariana Madix told the publication. The Hollywood Reporter On the fan support last year. "It was so nice because I felt the same way when I saw it. It felt like we were communicating from different parts of the world, sharing our excitement about everything that was happening.".
But maintaining that momentum among fans is another challenge (and we're not talking about those twisted Island challenges, if you know what I mean). But the team behind this reality dating show is embracing it.
In reality TV Love Island USA , Based on the original British series, a group of singles search for love in a stunning villa in Fiji. Throughout their stay, they will form couples, facing trials, temptations, and a host of unexpected twists, including the arrival of new "stunning" participants who will test their romantic relationships.
While the British version of the series became a fixture on British television after its launch in 2015, the first few seasons of the American version failed to capture the same level of traction with American audiences. Even after the series moved to NBC's Peacock platform after three seasons on CBS, the fourth and fifth seasons still failed to crack the top 10 of the Nielsen streaming charts.
But everything changed with the release of the sixth season in 2024. The result was a perfect combination: Madix, the star «"Vanderpump Rules"» , joined the show as the new host, the team included likable members, and the top-notch drama left viewers eager for more.
«"Many factors contributed to the show's success and its rapid growth after I took over as host. I'd really like to think I contributed to that," says Madix.
Season six reached a whole new level of success for Peacock, spending nine weeks in the Nielsen top 10 for original series before peaking around the midseason mark. During its run, the season was watched 6.58 billion minutes. But the success didn't stop there, as season seven became the most-watched original non-fiction series on Peacock in 2025. The season spent 11 weeks in the Nielsen top 10, reaching 11.4 billion minutes watched during that time.
«"The team has really focused on creating a show for the U.S. and for this audience, paying attention to what's right for the Islanders while still trying to keep it fresh, new, and all those little things that make it successful," says executive producer Bernie Shaffer of how the show has finally entered pop culture. "And we're very thoughtful about what creative solutions we're going to use each season.".
With this in mind, as Peacock prepares to premiere its long-awaited eighth season, producers can only hope to generate the same level of excitement as the previous two seasons. It may seem like a lot of pressure, but the team behind the scenes is embracing the challenge.
«"We all want to do it," Schaffer admits. "It comes from the top. It comes from our showrunner, Ben [Thursby], who's always pushing everyone to say, 'How can we do this better? What can we do differently?'"»
Before the show's contestants step foot in the stunning neon-colored villa that could become their home for weeks (you never know when you'll get kicked off the island), the producers have a lot of logistical planning to ensure the season runs as smoothly as possible. This planning phase is especially important, as filming takes place in real time, with the broadcast delayed by a day or two.
«"A lot of people come back to the show every year, and they really know how to do it. We rely on that," says Shaffer. "Plus, as people grow, they take on slightly different tasks. So the knowledge base is constantly growing, and everyone helps each other. It's a huge ship.".
Producers are also conducting a trial run of the show. Love Island with a provisional cast of participants several weeks before the start of the season, using the rehearsal period to check the quality of the production.
«"That's something we inherited from the British [show]," explains Shaffer. "They started doing tryouts, and we did the same, and it's great. It's like a sports team: we're going to perform, but we'll practice first. It allows us to really focus on the technical side of the show, which is crucial—there are a lot of moving parts—but it also allows us to experiment a little with the creative side.".
With all the cameras rolling, the neon signs lit, and the fridge stocked with eggs and avocado toast, the only thing missing is the contestants. The contestant list is perhaps the most complex, yet crucial, piece of the puzzle. «Islands of Love» , which, according to Shaffer, has been in the works for a whole year.
Since the show's contestants meet for the first time immediately after arriving at the villa, the casting department can't pre-select their partners. They have to wait and see how they interact. "We have an idea of how things will play out, but these are real people looking to find love," explains the executive producer. "We don't know what their relationship will be like.".
As with anything involving uncertainty, difficulties are inevitable. Last year saw several, particularly when internet investigators uncovered racist videos and posts by two cast members (both were ultimately dropped midseason after fan backlash).
Reflecting on the online discussions surrounding Islanders players last year, Shaffer says the team is always open to learning and improving.
«"It's always been crucial for us to do research, to study biographies, to be diligent, and that's always been the case," he says. THR On the casting process: "At the end of the season, we always look at how we can improve our work. And if we notice something that needs to be changed, we will. This is truly our philosophy in all aspects, and we strive to be as thorough as possible in this matter.".
Although Love Island contestant Vasana Montgomery has already been dropped from season eight after social media posts allegedly surfaced days before the premiere in which she used a racial slur (according to THR , the videos appear to be privately owned and were not released before the lineup was announced, meaning they were not available for pre-screening), Shaffer said in an interview with THR Before the video leak, he seemed exceptionally confident in the new lineup. He predicted that "we're going to have a great summer." on "Love Island" »» and that «everyone will really be able to find common ground with the participants» this year.
He also hints that "there will be new challenges" in which the Islanders will compete against each other, but also "some new challenges that I'm looking forward to.".
«"I know Ariana really enjoyed the milk challenge. I'm not sure if it'll come back," he jokes, referring to the "What's Your Problem?" challenge, in which contestants pass milk from mouth to mouth to fill a bucket. And Shaffer was right; it really is one of Madix's favorite moments from last season.
«"Everyone hates these cooking challenges and stuff, but I find them so funny because they're so quirky and not sexy at all," the host says in an interview. THR . "And sometimes I feel like we're constantly flaunting sexuality on our show. So sometimes it's nice to see something silly, gross, and weird.".
Fans can simply keep watching to find out if the show's contestants will have to eat dairy again, but Shaffer reminds viewers that "things can change at the last minute" depending on what happens in the villa.
«"We have a plan of action on all of these fronts, but if the situation changes, we can course-correct," says the executive producer, quoting the wise words of Ross Geller.
The eighth season of the reality show Love Island USA launches on Peacock on June 2.
