Show Love Island USA officially launched on the 2026 television schedule, meaning many will be using their Peacock subscription daily to catch up on the action in the villa. However, news is also circulating outside the show: the mayor criticized one of the contestants for quitting his police job to appear on the show. Now, the contestant's mother has responded to the criticism and defended her son.
What the mayor said about Sean David Reiffel going on Love Island«
Sean Reiffel, originally from Easton, Pennsylvania, joined the Bethlehem Police Department last year. He's no longer with the force, and Mayor J. William Reynolds has stated that it's due to his participation in the reality show. The mayor, too, is unhappy about it, as he told local ABC television station WHTM:
Our police department invested a great deal of time in his training, and we paid thousands of taxpayer dollars for his police academy education. We are disappointed with his departure, as we now have another vacancy in the department that cannot be filled until next year.
He went on to criticize Reiffel's decision to take part in the reality show and quit his job, stating:
I never thought I'd live to see the day in America when being on reality TV would be more important than being a police officer.
These comments quickly spread online since Reiffel's stay at the villa began on June 2. Now, his mother has commented on one of the posts, addressing the mayor's remarks.

The news quickly spread online, and in response to ET's post about it, Beth Raifel Bowe wrote, "I'm Sean's mom, they follow each other on Instagram, and she's been posting photos tagging him for years. Fiercely defending her son's choices, she wrote:
This is Sean's mom, and it really upsets me that the mayor doesn't understand what a huge missed opportunity he's missed. I'm interested in the facts, so let's start with Sean being placed on leave. Second, they didn't pay for Sean's full academy tuition. Sean came to Pennsylvania after working as a Contra County deputy sheriff in April 2021, and they paid for his full academy tuition. I'm not saying they didn't provide any training, but they also weren't completely honest about all the details. I'm proud of my son. It's a brave decision to come out to the world and seek love under the spotlight. ❤️
In an interview with The Morning Call, Police Chief Michelle Cott explained that she believes "no department would agree to allow someone to take a specific number of weeks off to appear on a television show." She also noted that the city does not approve of leave for part-time work.
It's no secret that appearing on reality TV can impact one's career. For some, it affects the day-to-day work they had before appearing on television; many others abandon their careers entirely.
It's not uncommon to see reality TV stars move from one project to another after their television debut.
