SpaceX's planned chip factory in Texas will use natural gas and powerful batteries to generate its own power.

For its planned chip factory in Texas, SpaceX has decided to use a combination of gas-fired power plants and large battery storage systems, a highly unusual decision for a project associated with Tesla and its clean energy business.

According to TechCrunch, the decision also reflects a trend in which fast-growing AI and semiconductor projects are moving toward burning dirty fuel to provide a constant power supply.

What's happening?

TechCrunch reported that the Terafab plant is planned for Grimes County, northwest of Houston, and that the facility will produce chips for data centers operated by SpaceX and xAI.

SpaceX's Riley Trettel, who oversees the company's energy and data center operations, said at a public meeting that the facility will generate its own electricity using methane and utilize large-scale battery-based energy storage systems.

Tesla has a stake in the project and is a major developer of solar and battery systems, but there was no mention of ground-based solar power.

This plan also aligns with Elon Musk's trend toward using gas-fired power for businesses with massive energy needs. TechCrunch reported that xAI's Memphis data centers rely heavily on methane, and SpaceX plans to spend $2.8 billion on gas turbines by 2029.

Why is this important?

Semiconductor manufacturing plants and AI data centers consume large amounts of electricity, and the choice of energy sources for even a single facility can impact pollution, costs, and grid planning for years to come. When a large company builds its own gas-fired power plants, it cements the use of fuel combustion as the primary solution for meeting new industrial demand.

Coal and gas-fired power plants contribute to air and water pollution, which is linked to asthma, heart disease, cancer, and premature death, and can also keep energy prices high for households, who remain tied to fuel sources with fluctuating prices instead of more affordable resources like sunlight and wind.

In Texas, electricity reliability and affordability remain serious concerns for families, and rising energy bills associated with data center development are already reflected in state utility bills. Industry lobbying may also delay the implementation of cleaner and cheaper energy solutions, protecting legacy fuel investments and slowing the development of renewable energy, storage, and transmission systems that could lower bills and better protect households.

What is being done?

SpaceX stated that the project will include large-scale battery storage, which will help smooth out power consumption and reduce load during periods of peak demand. Batteries can play an important role in ensuring reliability, but they don't eliminate pollution if their charging system still relies primarily on gas.

Texas is deploying solar, wind, and battery storage systems on a large scale, and analysts say that when combined with grid upgrades and expanded transmission lines, these resources will become more cost-effective options over time.

Reducing reliance on gas-fired power can be achieved through shared solar panels, rooftop solar panels (if budgets allow), home energy efficiency improvements, and utility programs that encourage shifting electricity consumption from peak hours to later periods.

SpaceX stated that Terafab will be "self-powered" using "very large batteries." xAI, the company that will operate the data centers powered by the plant, is already facing a lawsuit over the gas turbines powering its Memphis facilities.
