The hosts of The View decided to use a visual aid to answer their second "Hot Topic" of the day on Wednesday (June 3).
When the topic of embattled Senate candidate Graham Platner came up—for the second time since the issue was discussed earlier this week—they watched videos of political reactions to his scandals, including the moment Donald Trump called Platner a "scumbag.".
When the reel ended, the board continued to illuminate, this time with a photograph of a pot and teapot, which brought to mind the good old saying "the pot accuses the teapot of blackness.".
When Whoopi Goldberg pointed to the photo, the audience burst into laughter.
Then guest host Kara Swisher joked, "When he said that, I thought, 'Well, he should know.'".
«"The term 'scoundrel' is so '80s," joked Sarah Haines.
«"He's kind of stuck in the '80s," Goldberg agreed.
Then the conversation turned serious, and Goldberg said, "There have to be people out there who haven't been accused of having bad tattoos or harassment. Change just has to happen. Come on, guys, you need to run! Come on!"«
Swisher then stated, "Obviously, he's a problematic person. He's done a lot of bad things. He had a drinking problem… but you're either going to be effective or you're going to lose." She added, "Democrats hold themselves to a higher standard in this regard, but as far as I'm concerned, the people of Maine get to decide for themselves who they want in office, and if they pardon this guy, which is part of the idea, then that's a good thing.".
Sunny Hostin, who admitted she had previously been "undecided" about Platner, then explained that if she were a Maine resident, she would "hold her nose" and vote for him because, "I'm now convinced that things are really bad in our country. Democrats need to take control of the Senate. They need to take control of the House. They need to bring back some semblance of normalcy.".
Haines said she "categorically disagrees" with Hostin and asserted she would have voted for incumbent Republican Susan Collins. "If we're going to say, 'Donald Trump is a problem, look at this guy, look at that guy,' we can't hold our noses and send in someone who's anti-Semitic, racist, bigoted, sexting—whatever.".
Alyssa Farah Griffin then said Democrats don't necessarily nominate Platner for the position. "I'm just incredibly uncomfortable with the perception that there are Nazis on my right and Nazis on my left.".
Hostin then drew applause from the audience by noting, "The president is a 34-time convicted felon.".
In conclusion, Goldberg reiterated her assertion: "At some point, we have to think about getting better results on both sides. I think there are better candidates on both sides.".
