Tom Holland isn't planning on giving up his role as Spider-Man just yet, but he's already talking about the day when someone else takes center stage.
The actor who returns as Peter Parker in in the film "Spider-Man: New Day"« , told Empire magazine , who would be happy to help pave the way for the next chapter of the franchise when the time comes. Holland specifically mentioned Miles Morales, Spider-Man Gwen, and Spider-Woman as possible candidates for that future.
This comment isn't a retirement announcement. It's a glimpse into how Holland now sees his place in the Spider-Man legacy: not just as the current Peter Parker, but perhaps as a more experienced character who will help the next superhero take center stage.
Holland wants to repay Downey for his mentorship.

In an interview Empire magazine Holland said he would be "very pleased" if he could eventually do for the next Spider-Man what Robert Downey Jr. did for him. This comparison carries real weight in the Marvel world, as Downey's Tony Stark helped introduce Holland's Peter Parker to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. in the film "Captain America: Civil War"« .
In the first Spider-Man films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tony Stark became a mentor, protector, and complex father figure to Peter. Off-screen, Downey also became a role model for Holland, a young actor joining one of Hollywood's biggest franchises.
So, Holland's comment isn't so much about leaving, but about passing on the role. He speaks as if he understands that Spider-Man is more than just one actor, one trilogy, or one version of Peter Parker.
The first thing fans will notice is the name Miles Morales.

Holland's mention of Miles Morales will almost certainly attract the most attention. Miles is already one of the most important Spider-Man characters in modern pop culture, thanks to comics, games, and Sony's animated films. «Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse» .
This doesn't mean Marvel and Sony have announced they'll transfer the rights to Miles Morales into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a live-action film. They haven't. The important detail is that Holland openly envisions a future where another hero with Spider-Man's abilities could become the central character, and he himself could help make that transition.
Miles already has his own on-screen persona outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to films «Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse» и «Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse» . This gives viewers a clear point of reference, even if his appearance in the MCU film version is not yet confirmed.

The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and is scheduled for release in theaters on July 31, 2026. The plot continues the ending of the film. «Spider-Man: No Way Home» , where Doctor Strange's spell erased Peter Parker's memories from those who loved him.
This reboot gives Brand New Day comic A different function compared to Holland's first trilogy. Peter is no longer a young hero surrounded by the Avengers, Stark technology, and close friends who know his secret. He is pushed closer to the classic idea of Spider-Man: lonely, responsible, yet still striving to help others.
Passing the baton will only work if Peter's story deserves it.
Holland's comment is compelling, arguing that Spider-Man was always meant to be reinvented. Peter Parker is the original template, but the idea of Spider-Man has extended to different characters, universes, personalities, and genres.
Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, and other Spider-Man characters allow the franchise to explore various aspects of power, grief, responsibility, family, and fame. The transition from one character to another will only be successful if the story merits it, not if it feels like a quick franchise refresh.
Holland seems to understand this. He wasn't saying he'd be replaced tomorrow. He was talking about helping "set the stage for the next chapter," whatever form that chapter might take.
The Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse films have already changed audience perceptions.

Animated films «Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse» have already trained audiences to perceive Spider-Man as a unified concept, rather than a single, fixed personality. Miles Morales has become the franchise's emotional center, while Peter Parker, Gwen Stacy, Miguel O'Hara, Punk Spider-Man, and other iterations have helped expand the mythology.
This is important for Holland's future because the Marvel Cinematic Universe has already used a similar emotional device in a film. «No Way Home» . Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield returned as older Peter Parkers, providing Holland's version with guidance, insight into his past, and a warning when he needed it most.
In future Marvel Cinematic Universe stories where Holland mentors Miles, Gwen, or another Spider-Man, this idea could be reimagined. Peter would no longer be a boy learning from legends. He would become an experienced Spider-Man helping someone else achieve the same goal.
Marvel and Sony need to be careful with deadlines.
The timing is not easy. «Brand New Day» is positioned as a new beginning for Holland's Peter Parker, not an ending. If the film is meant to restore his life on the streets after «No Way Home» , then a hasty start to a new story could undermine this update.
At the same time, the franchise can't ignore the wider Spider-Man universe forever. Miles Morales is too important to remain just a fan theory in the films, and Holland's comments will further intensify that discussion.
The easiest way is patience: let Brand New Day first reestablish Peter Parker's character, and then use a later story to introduce another Spider-hero in a way that feels like an evolution of Peter's character, rather than a forced handoff from the studio dictated by franchise calculations.
