In an office, a humanoid robot begins waving its arms. Another appears to be charging toward the crowd at a festival. In the most disturbing video, a robotic performer kicks a child in the stomach.
These videos quickly went viral because they struck a chord. Humanoid robots can move at astonishing speeds. When a machine loses its balance or follows an incorrect pattern, people nearby have little time to react.
So what do these videos say about robot safety, and what needs to change before these machines become available to the general public?

A robot demonstration should be meant to arouse curiosity, not make you duck under a metal arm or leg. However, several of these videos feature people standing too close to the powerful machines. In one video, workers sit next to a humanoid robot during a test. When it suddenly begins moving erratically, they have only a few seconds to jump out of the way. In another, viewers crowd around the robot because it seems to be in control. Then the movement shifts, and the feeling of safety vanishes.
This is what particularly struck me. These robots move fast, weigh a lot, and can generate real force. If something goes wrong, people nearby may have very little time to react. Of course, videos on social media rarely tell the whole story. We may not know who was operating the robot, what program was running, or who activated the emergency stop. So we'll stick to what's clearly visible in the videos and point out anything we can't yet confirm.

The footage ranges from an indoor kung fu incident to a public performance that ends with a child on the ground. The videos vary in age and location. However, each one raises the same question: why were people allowed so close to a powerful robot that was malfunctioning?

The first video begins as a playful demonstration. A humanoid robot performs dance-like movements while people stand nearby. Then the robot's arms accelerate, transforming into wide, sweeping movements. Its legs also swing with such force that people step back. Several adults try to regain control, while others dart to the side to avoid collision. Those filming from above appear amused. Meanwhile, the people standing next to the robot look terrified. The video doesn't provide a confirmed explanation for these movements. However, it does demonstrate how quickly a performance can become dangerous when spectators are in the same space as a robot.
The second video shows a humanoid robot near a crowd at a public event. A post on X claims the incident occurred in China. It describes the robot malfunctioning before staff immobilized it. The robot appears to move toward a person near a barrier. Staff then grab the robot and pull it away. The video alone isn't enough to determine whether the robot tripped or lost its balance. It's possible it misread a command or performed the wrong request. In any case, the crowd had very little room to retreat.
The third video shows a behind-the-scenes look. A humanoid robot hangs from a hook, and two workers sit next to it. At first, the robot makes small movements. Then, its arms begin to move more rapidly, and its entire body begins to thrash wildly. One of the workers jumps to the side, and the machine hits nearby equipment. Several commenters on Reddit suggested that the movement could be caused by a balance feedback loop. According to this theory, the robot was constantly trying to correct its posture, while the cable prevented it from responding normally. Each subsequent correction became increasingly significant. This explanation has not yet been confirmed. However, this scene illustrates the need for engineers to maintain distance and be able to immediately stop the robot during testing.
Another video makes a particularly powerful emotional impression. A humanoid robot performs for families while children stand at its feet. The robot then kicks one child in the stomach. The child bends over and squats to the ground, and the performance continues for several more seconds. A comment on Reddit, linking to a separate social media post, states that the incident occurred at a scenic spot in China's Xinjiang region. The post states that the child's mother contacted the police and criticized the park administration. It also claims that the child escaped serious injury. These details remain unofficial. However, the video itself shows the child coming into contact with a motorized metal leg during a public performance.
Another video on Reddit shows a humanoid robot on a slippery floor. It appears to have begun a standing exercise. Instead, its body squirms and its legs begin to twitch as someone reaches toward it. Commenters in the robotics community offered a possible explanation. They speculated that the robot may have switched from standing to walking mode before establishing a stable position. The floor may also have had reduced traction, causing the robot to continue struggling to regain its balance while its motorized limbs moved alongside the person. Again, this explanation comes from community discussion, not a confirmed incident report. The apparent danger remains clear. The person was reaching toward the moving robot with exposed joints and no visible obstacle.
These incidents point to a number of changes that event organizers and robot companies should make before inviting crowds into close quarters.
The safety zone should extend beyond the robot's maximum possible step, swing, kick, or fall. Children should be further away, as they have less time and space to react.

Throughout the demonstration, a qualified operator must hold the dedicated emergency control panel. Under no circumstances should personnel have to struggle with the robot to find the switch.
For public demonstrations, a low-power mode is required. The robot should slow down when a person enters its safe zone.
Engineers must test how the robot responds on real flooring. They must also test what happens when the robot's standing motion fails.
Any collision or impact warrants a written report. Organizers must retain video footage and explain what has changed before the robot returns to the public event.
As humanoid robots move beyond controlled labs, you may encounter them at public demonstrations or events. First, inspect the area around the robot. A small rope or a few people can provide limited protection if a powered mechanism loses its balance.
Also, keep children close by. Avoid photo shoots where they are near the robot's hands or feet. If the robot falls or makes sudden movements, move away immediately. Have the robot restrained by trained personnel using the safety shutoff devices. Motorized joints can create pinch points and violent swings. Finally, report any physical contact and seek medical attention if necessary. A brief impact with a metal element can cause injury, even after the robot resumes operation.
These videos demonstrate failures in physical machines that people nearby cannot predict. I believe innovation should never come at the expense of our well-being. Robotics companies can drive progress, but public demonstrations require safeguards that will work in the event of a failure.
