Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) never planned on working for anyone else, but that's exactly the situation they find themselves in. Dutton Ranch .
In Season 1, Episode 5, Rip and Beth face a new reality: their herd is gone, but the bills keep coming. Beth suggests returning to the corporate world, even if it means living in the big city far away from Rip. He rejects the idea, unwilling to leave his wife, and instead takes a job as foreman at a rival ranch—much to Beth's dismay.
Meanwhile, Carter (Finn Little) secretly works on a local farm instead of going to school. But after taking a job with a stranger, he finds himself in danger and, after a traumatic incident, ends up back in police custody.
So, what happened in episode 5 of season 1 of the series? «Dutton Ranch» Here's a detailed breakdown of everything that happened.
Where did Rip get his job as a foreman?

After his entire herd perishes from foot-and-mouth disease, Rip is forced to find a way to pay the bills. He turns to local veterinarian Everett McKinney (Ed Harris), who arranges a meeting with the owner of the Ten Petals Ranch, Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening).
Rip knows Beulah's ranch is struggling under foreman Chet (Hart Denton) and offers himself as a solution. Drawing on his years of experience managing Yellowstone, he offers to bring order to the vast ranch.
Although Beulah is intrigued, she doubts Rip can manage both her 75,000-acre property and his own ranch. Unaware that Rip no longer has a herd, she insists he take on the challenge.
«"With all due respect, ma'am, your ranch and mine combined aren't a quarter of what Yellowstone is," Rip replies confidently.
His answer is enough to win her heart. Beulah hires him on the spot, and Rip starts work the next morning at 4:30.
It didn't take him long to identify the ranch's main problem. After a day of manual labor, Rip decides Chet needs to be fired, and he does. Later, over dinner in the main house, he informs Beulah of this change.
«"Well, we've already made some changes. Madam, Chet doesn't work here anymore. He's the kind of guy who's toxic," Rip explains.
Having settled this issue, they move on to salary negotiations. Beulah initially offers $8,000 per month, plus a truck and a house. Rip offers $11,000 per month, and she accepts, making him the new manager of 10 Petal Ranch.
Who killed Carter's friend Dwight?
In Season 1, Episode 4, Carter decides he's had enough of school and starts looking for a job. Although he'd rather help out on the Dutton ranch, Beth and Rip won't let him quit, forcing him to look for work elsewhere. He eventually lands a job on the farm of local rancher Dwight White (Ray McKinnon).
A friendship quickly develops between the two, and Dwight even trusts Carter enough to reveal a closely guarded secret: he is illegally keeping an African leopard on his property.
But their friendship ends abruptly in Episode 5, when law enforcement arrives at the farm. When the cops arrive, Dwight takes off running, with Carter hot on his heels. Moments later, Carter finds Dwight lying face down after being shot in the back by Sheriff Wade (Josh Stewart).
Wade claims he fired in self-defense after Dwight nearly attacked him with a knife. However, as the police handcuff Carter, he notices the knife is still in Dwight's holster.
At the police station, Wade tries to justify the shooting.
«"Dwight White was a worthless man. He was a drunk, an insurance fraudster, and a thief. He stole from the sick and the elderly. He was like cow manure. Cow manure stuck to the heel of this county's boot, and sooner or later it had to be scraped off," he says.
Carter objects, insisting his friend was killed in cold blood. Wade responds with a warning, making it clear that speaking out will have consequences.
«"You weren't at Dwight White's tonight. You didn't see anything. And you'll never say anything," the sheriff tells him.
Frightened and shocked, Carter nods silently and leaves the station.
What business proposal did Beth make to Beulah Jackson?

While Rip spends his first day as foreman at 10 Petal Ranch, Beth is busy developing her own plan - a plan she believes can secure the future of Dutton Ranch.
That evening, Beth visits Beulah and lays all her cards on the table. She explains that she and Rip were forced to cull their entire herd after foot-and-mouth disease spread among the cattle. Then she shifts the conversation to "10 Petals," making it clear she's well-versed in Beulah's financial difficulties and her years-long struggle to save the ranch.
«"Since then, Beulah, you've been over-indebted and under-capitalized. This place is hanging on by a thread," Beth says. "You're a sitting duck, Beulah, and you know it. Grow or die. A legacy is a wonderful thing, but only if it damn well survives.".
Instead of simply pointing out the problem, Beth offers a solution.
«"You hire me. In three years, I could turn this 10 Petal brand into a household name. A line of premium cuts. We're targeting only the high-end market. But you'll need a new herd," she explains. "Rip is the foreman. I take your steaks to market. We manage everything for you. I'll want 20% profit, but in five years, Rip and I will be gone.".
The offer immediately catches Beulah's attention. She begins to imagine how the famous Dutton name will be associated with her products, but Beth quickly dismisses the idea.
«"My name is not for sale. Dutton will never be part of this deal, but you will get me and my services," she says.
Recognizing the value of Beth's contribution, Beulah agrees.
Which Jackson family member returned from rehab?
Early in the first season, Beulah's troubled son, Rob-Will Jackson (Jai Courtney), caused quite a bit of trouble. He killed a worker at the 10 Petal Ranch and later had a tense confrontation with Rip at a gas station, leading Beulah to send him to rehab.
The so-called "indefinite leave" was less about recovery and more about getting Rob-Will off the ranch before he caused further damage to the family's reputation and business.
But at the end of episode 5, Rob-Will unexpectedly returns, having left rehab early. His first stop isn't 10 Petal Ranch, but the home of former foreman Chet.
Given Rob-Will's past relationship with Rip and Chet's resentment over losing his job, the pairing could create problems for Rip as he settles into his new position at 10 Petal Ranch.
