"The Daily Show" host Michael Costa on Tuesday criticized Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, for their recent purchase of a private island off the coast of Albania, joking, "There's got to be an easier way to divorce someone.".
«"For those of you thinking, 'Hey, shouldn't billionaires do their homework before buying a private island?' you don't realize there aren't any guest rooms on the island yet," Costa dryly remarked to Comedy Central viewers. "They can't lay the groundwork for those guest rooms until they burn down all those stupid trees, okay? And by the way, Jared and Ivanka aren't some real estate moguls traveling the world buying up private islands. This was more of an impulse buy!"„
After showing a clip of Trump recounting how he and Kushner fell in love with the island after sailing there on a friend's boat, Costa joked, "Girl, I get it. I've been there too... Only instead of the Mediterranean, I was swimming in the Hudson River, and the island I walked barefoot on was Staten Island, and instead of buying it, I stepped on a needle and got HPV. But I get it.".
«"I just have one follow-up question: Can you imagine this being any more out of touch with reality?" Costa asked, showing a clip in which Trump called the island purchase the "culmination" of her entire real estate experience and a "tangible embodiment" of how "people increasingly want to live.".
«"Come on, lady! You're rich and you bought an island. Just say it!" Costa said after the video. "Not everything has to be a deep spiritual journey, you know? It's like when you're looking for a chicken salad recipe and you have to scroll through nine pages about how the cook's grandparents escaped the Balkan Wars on a donkey cart. So what did grandma use—paprika or mustard? What is this?!"»
In response to reports that Trump and Kushner's new island is still littered with unexploded mines and abandoned military bunkers, Costa remarked, "This place sounds like heaven on Earth.".
«"There's got to be an easier way to divorce someone," he added. "Ivanka was on that island and she was like, 'Jared, smile. Hey, a little to the left. More to the left. Hey, jump up and down, Jared.'".
Costa later turned his attention to Trump's father, President Donald Trump, whose plan to create a potential $1.8 billion slush fund was effectively rejected this week by both Democratic and Republican members of Congress.
«"What? You're saying that instead of simply agreeing with everything Trump says, members of Congress can stand up to him?" Costa asked. "That they can provide some kind of check and/or balance? That's great! But what's not so great is that he's gone so far as to say that this check and/or balance doesn't involve using illegal money to pay pedophiles to storm the Capitol. But still, good job, Congress!"»
«"This just proves that if you pull yourself together and overcome adversity, you can do even the bare minimum at your job," the Daily Show host said. "This should silence those who continue to say that Congress is only good at insider trading.".
