Disney has introduced a new member of the Madrigal family. The Madrigals are a fantastical family located in the heart of Encanto, living in their magical, sentient home, Casita. The Madrigal family is large, numbering over a dozen members, but now it's even bigger with the addition of Luis Madrigal in Descendants: Wicked Wonderland.
Luis Madrigal has been confirmed to be the son of Luisa from "Encanto," the older sister of the main character, Mirabelle, voiced by Jessica Darrow. Luisa is distinguished by her superhuman strength, and she stands out as the tallest and strongest of the Madrigal family. Alejandro Bird will join the cast of "Descendants: Wicked Wonderland" as Luis, and the first character poster released by Disney has already revealed his appearance.
It seems that young Madrigal has inherited his mother's strength, as evidenced by the image of his biceps on the poster.
His attire reflects the Colombian world of Encanto: Luis wears a white tunic, a vest decorated with colorful flowers and vines, and an image of the Miraculous Candle that gives the Madrigals their gifts.
There's a definite family resemblance between Louis and Louise, despite the transition from animation to live-action. Louise's powers were a gift from the magic candle, and she subsequently became the pillar of her family. Louise became a vibrant character in Encanto, and her son's inclusion in Descendants: Wicked Wonderland is a testament to this popularity.
Because Descendants: Wicked Wonderland follows its own script and takes creative liberties with the plots it draws on, Luis's backstory is currently unknown, and it's unclear who his other parent is or what his relationship is with Lucia and the Madrigals. Luis didn't have a love interest in Encanto, so it will be interesting to see if Descendants: Wicked Wonderland will offer any post-credits commentary on the events in Encanto.
Fans are eagerly awaiting news about a possible Encanto sequel, so Louis' appearance in Descendants may be the closest thing to that.
The Descendants films bring together various descendants and younger family members of famous Disney characters. Descendants: Wicked Wonderland stars Little Red Riding Hood, the daughter of the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, and Chloe Charming, the daughter of Cinderella and Prince Charming. The Descendants films gradually expand the list of Disney families featured in the franchise, and Encanto is just the latest. Descendants: Wicked Wonderland is the fifth installment in the franchise, premiering on Disney Channel on July 16 and on Disney+ the following day.
What is Luis Madrigal's role in the Descendants universe?
«Descendants: Wicked Wonderland is a direct sequel to Descendants: Rise of Red Riding Hood and follows Chloe and Red Riding Hood after their return from time travel in the previous film. As it turns out, their time-traveling tampering has consequences, and the villain, Maddox Hatter (the Mad Hatter's son), seeks the return of his magical pocket watch.
A key plot point that may hint at Louis's involvement is the Kingdom Cup Games, which in the film take place in Wonderland. Similar to the World Cup or the Olympics, the United States of Auradon sends its members to compete for the Kingdom Cup.
Considering that Louis seems to have inherited his mother's incredible strength, it stands to reason that he will represent his home country at the Kingdom Cup Games and perhaps find himself involved in some history after being sent off to compete.
Other Disney characters and relatives appearing in Descendants: Wicked Wonderland include Hazel Hook (Captain Hook's daughter), Robbie Hood (Robin Hood's son), and Squeaky and Squirmy Smee (Mr. Smee's twin sons). Characters like Rita Ora's Queen of Hearts and Paolo Montalban's King Charming will also be present to keep an eye on their children.
