ImGist - I Am the Essence

Emilia Clarke was embarrassed by the brain hemorrhage she suffered while filming Game of Thrones and did not tell HBO about it.

Emilia Clarke spoke about her two brain hemorrhages, at the ages of 22 and 24. She admitted that her diagnosis was kept secret from HBO in 2011 because she was "ashamed" of it and didn't fully understand the nature of her "brain hemorrhage." She believed that publicly discussing the diagnosis could help her cope and was amazed by how many people shared their stories.

Emilia Clarke says she was "ashamed and shocked" after being diagnosed with a brain haemorrhage.

At the Variety Power of Women London event, Clarke broke her silence, revealing the two brain hemorrhages she'd suffered. She revealed the first occurred when she was 22, the same age she filmed the first season of Game of Thrones. The second occurred at 24, during her Broadway debut. "I'd like to blame the bad reviews on the brain hemorrhage, but it happened after the play closed, right at the beginning," she added.

Reflecting on the experience, she added, "Fifteen years after the first hemorrhage, I realize how difficult that time was. I never had the chance to comprehend what the two head injuries did to me, because I could walk, talk, be myself, remember my lines, and return to filming within weeks of both injuries.".

The Me Before You actress said she didn't want anyone to know about her 2011 diagnosis, even avoiding telling HBO because she was "ashamed" and "shocked" to learn the diagnosis.

«"We didn't even tell HBO until we were sure I wasn't going to die, and in television terms, that's usually when they kill you. After my second hemorrhage in 2014, I started to think maybe speaking publicly would help. But it still took me years to come to terms with my truth," she continued. She mentioned that in 2019, she finally mustered the courage to disclose her diagnosis and was overwhelmed by the response she received from people who had experienced similar experiences.

«"The road to healing is like falling off a cliff with no one there to catch you," she delivered a message on behalf of the trauma survivor community.
