EXCLUSIVE: Ahead of the Netflix release of the romantic comedy "« Voicemails for Isabelle"» , produced by Sony Pictures, Leah Mackendrick has landed a major new project from the studio: a biopic about global country-pop star Shania Twain, which she will direct from her own original screenplay.
Plot details of the film called «Shania »" are being kept under wraps. Rumor has it that Mackendrick's background as a pop singer and songwriter played a crucial role in her landing the role.

Twain will produce alongside Amy Carp. Jessica Welch previously wrote a screenplay about Twain for the studio. This project is just the latest major music biopic from Sony, which released the film. «Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody» via TriStar in December 2022 and is behind the upcoming Sam Mendes film "« The Beatles - A Cinematic Event of Four Films» .
A five-time Grammy Award winner, Twain has helped redefine country music for a global audience since the 1980s, paving the way for the genre-blending that has shaped the modern sound of country and pop. Her era-defining catalog includes such timeless hits as "Any Man of Mine," "That Don't Impress Me Much," "You're Still the One," and "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!".
Having sold over 100 million albums worldwide, Twain remains the best-selling female country-pop artist of all time. She also made history as the first artist to release three consecutive diamond-certified albums.
Twain's seventh studio album, Little Miss Twain , which is considered the most personal work of her career, is scheduled for release on July 24. She is represented by Scott Rodger and Leila Hebden of Maverick, CAA, and Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks.
Mackendrick is a director who rose to fame with the film «Scrambled» , a tragicomedy about egg freezing, which premiered at SXSW to critical acclaim and was released in theaters in 2024 by Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions. She also recently wrote and directed the film. «Voicemails for Isabelle» , the aforementioned Netflix romantic comedy starring Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson, in which she plays a supporting role. The film, produced by Sony Pictures and Escape Artists, is scheduled for release on June 19.
