Oreo and BTS united fans around the world with a limited-edition cookie.

Global brands often face challenges creating campaigns that resonate across multiple markets while maintaining a consistent brand identity. Mondelēz International believes it has found a solution with Oreo's new partnership with global music phenomenon BTS. The campaign also reflects the continuing influence of Korean popular culture on global marketing. As K-pop expands internationally, brands are increasingly considering partnerships with Korean artists as a means of reaching young consumers beyond geographic boundaries.

Why Oreo is collaborating with BTS

According to Ogilvy's Fandom Fanflux study, 75% young fans are more likely to purchase products from brands that directly engage with their fandoms. Oreo's partnership with BTS aligns the brand with one of the world's most influential music groups. The group's millions of fans, known as ARMY, are renowned for their devotion.

The special packaging features a sweet, creamy filling inspired by hotteok, the warm, brown sugar-filled pancakes popular in South Korea.

The new campaign features limited-edition Oreo and BTS cookies, which can be pre-ordered starting June 1st at Oreo.com/UnwrapTheCollab and will be available in retail stores on June 8th, while supplies last. The partnership is a global campaign running in over 80 countries.

According to Matt Foley, vice president of Oreo at Mondelēz International, the partnership with BTS was rooted in a genuine emotional connection with the brand. He said, "BTS grew up eating OREO cookies in Korea and still eat them while recording. From day one, we envisioned this as a deeply authentic, fulfilling partnership, not just a corporate deal—and with the rise of Korean culture in global pop culture, we wanted to support the band and their fans in a way that felt authentic, not like chasing a trend.".

BTS and Oreo Fan Communities Unite

Maintaining consistency across more than 80 countries presents a significant challenge for any global campaign. Foley believes the campaign's focus on shared experiences and cultural authenticity will resonate across all markets. "While packaging translations may vary by region," he says, "we wanted to maintain consistency in the core experience across the 80+ countries participating in this launch. We worked hand-in-hand with BTS to select a flavor—a brown sugar pancake inspired by the Korean snack hotteok—that is deeply rooted in Korean culture while remaining accessible and delicious to consumers worldwide. By presenting this unique flavor at such a scale, despite slight adaptations to account for regional production, the authentic hotteok taste and iconic OREO experience remain consistent globally.".

The cookies feature a sweet, creamy filling inspired by hotteok, a warm, brown-sugar-filled pancake popular at Korean street food markets. According to the company, this flavor is meant to reflect the BTS members' childhood memories of hotteok and Oreo cookies.

BTS's role in collaborative work

According to Oreo, BTS was actively involved in the process, helping develop the flavor, create unique embossed images, and design the packaging to accurately reflect their relationship with fans. This involvement can enhance the perception of authenticity among fans, which is becoming an increasingly important factor in partnerships with influencers and celebrities.

Overall, Oreo pursues collaborative strategies on both a global and local level. Foley cites the exclusive collaboration with Post Malone in the US and the recent exclusive release of Blackpink in Asia as examples. The partnership with BTS represents the brand's largest global launch to date. Foley notes, "It was a truly unique opportunity to bring together two huge global fan bases, and the response so far has been incredible.".

The packaging design is inspired by the energy and atmosphere of Korean street markets, and the cookies (which vary depending on the packaging) feature the band members' names, a BTS glow stick, and a special hidden message written on three cookies—designed to attract fans' attention. The special message invites fans to create the world's largest love letter to BTS by scanning a QR code and sending a digital message for a chance to win Oreo and BTS prizes.

How a BTS collaboration aims to strengthen Oreo's positioning.

Foley emphasizes that the campaign reinforces Oreo's brand positioning, even on a global scale. "Oreo is about shared passion and playfulness; bringing together BTS's incredibly loyal fan base with our own loyal OREO fans is the perfect combination that allows a brand with such a rich history like ours to remain at the forefront of pop culture," he asserts. "The beauty of this campaign is that the language of music, fandom, and shared joy is universal. Our strategy is to always build partnerships centered on our iconic Oreo cookie, creating shared, playful experiences that resonate across borders.".

While Oreo's marketing team will evaluate the campaign's impact on sales and market share, the primary goal is fan engagement. Foley says success will be measured by "how fans engage with the digital spaces we've created, including our call for fans to send digital messages to help create the 'world's biggest BTS love letter.' For us, success means seeing people enthusiastically pick up this product and use it as a platform to express their genuine love for the band—and, in turn, becoming loyal, lifelong OREO customers.".

This collaborative campaign with BTS demonstrates how brands are increasingly leveraging fan engagement, cultural relevance, and co-creation to enhance consumer engagement on a global scale.
