On Monday, June 1, the director and actor shared a video of himself with his mother on Instagram, captioning it as something he filmed in March 2025 while taking her to a Dave and Buster's restaurant and arcade. In the video, shared by Smith, 55, his mother plays a racing game at the arcade and ranks 40th out of 40. "Remember to take breaks every now and then and keep your eyes on the road, Grace!" Smith can be heard saying in the video as he and his mother laugh while she drives, muttering, "Give me the right-of-way!"«

Smith announced Grace's death on December 1, 2025, in an Instagram post he made the following day. Grace died just two days after the film's director «Clerks» He noted in a separate social media post that his mother "suddenly found herself at death's door" but had recovered from her illness and was in hospital.

In that post, Smith jokingly wrote that he was the "star of the show" in his family, which included Grace, his father Don (who died in 2003 at 67), older brother Donald, and older sister Virginia. "But the real star was always the amazing Grace—the mother of all mothers. She was a lioness, fiercely protective of her pride, who lived for her children—so there wasn't a day in my life that I didn't feel valued as a person, cherished as a child, and deeply loved beyond measure," he wrote then.
