The director of "A Walk to Remember" and "Hairspray" took to Instagram on Tuesday to deny speculation that his upcoming film with RuPaul would make extensive use of generative artificial intelligence, after fans spread the rumors on social media platforms like X and Letterboxd.
«"Every frame in Stop That Train! was created by human hands! I've heard rumors online that every frame in Stop That Train! was created entirely by artificial intelligence, and I can confidently say that is absolutely not true," Shankman wrote. "There is not a single frame in the film created by artificial intelligence. We had hundreds of visual effects artists working tirelessly to bring this film to theaters, and not a single one of these was done by humans. The film is a completely human-made work, filled with joy and laughter.".
He concluded his message by saying, "Enjoy and have fun! We need laughter!"«
His comments came after some early screeners reported the presence of artificial intelligence from World of Wonder and Bleecker Street. While Acme AI & FX is listed in the credits, this could be due to pre-visualization or something similar.
In addition to RuPaul, the film stars Drag Race stars Jujubee, Ginger Minj, Brooke Lynn Hytes, Symone, Marcia Marcia Marcia (aka Marty Lauter), Monet X Change, Latrice Royale, and Angeria Paris VanMichaels, among many other LGBTQ icons and allies.
The film "Stop This Train!" is released in cinemas on June 12.
