Thanks to the Third Straw project, Las Vegas will be able to continue drawing water from Lake Mead, despite its drying up.

Lake Mead is one of the most carefully monitored reservoirs in the country, and Las Vegas relies heavily on it, but the city has also built additional protection deep underwater.

A recent TikTok video from user Armchair Engineer (@armchairengineer) explains why Las Vegas can continue to withdraw water even if the reservoir level drops below the Hoover Dam's "dead pool.".

What's happening?

The video portrays Las Vegas as a city far better prepared for water shortages than many might assume.

«"Las Vegas may be a huge and sprawling city, but they really know what they're doing when it comes to saving water," they said, describing it as potentially "the most water-efficient major city in North America.".

Instead of relying solely on a single route from Lake Mead, Las Vegas eventually built three intake points. The oldest pipeline dates back to the 1950s and was only recently reopened when the reservoir's water levels receded, and a later expansion added a larger intake point on Saddle Island.

About two decades ago, as concerns about drought intensified, authorities began implementing what would become the most significant of these innovations.

City officials "spent more than a billion dollars building the so-called 'Third Straw,'" a deep tunnel connected to an intake located much lower than previous systems.

The significance of this project lies in its elevation. The video states that the reservoir is 895 feet above sea level, while the Third Straw is 860 feet above sea level. Therefore, once the reservoir's water level drops below the point at which Hoover Dam can no longer move water normally, Las Vegas could have approximately 35 feet of water remaining above the intake level.

Why is this important?

Calling something "drought-resistant" can create an impression of certainty that the situation does not actually possess.

Instead, Las Vegas extended Lake Mead's access period beyond what its old infrastructure allowed.

For a desert metropolis that relies heavily on the reservoir, this additional supply is of great importance.

As Armchair Engineer noted, "If the water level drops too low, they won't even be able to run water through the Hoover Dam. It's called 'Deadpool.'".

«The "Third Drop" doesn't prevent drought, but it does help protect the city's water intake from declining lake levels. A deeper intake may buy time, but it won't create new water sources in the Colorado River system.

What is being done?

The most important step is the infrastructure already in place in Las Vegas. Instead of waiting for Lake Mead's water level to reach critical levels, the city preemptively built a deeper intake and connected it to the existing network.

The video also emphasized the importance of nature conservation as an integral part of the strategy.

Having access to lower water levels doesn't eliminate the need to reduce demand. They presented Las Vegas as an unusually efficient city for its size, suggesting that careful planning and waste reduction help make the "Third Straw" a backup option rather than an indulgence.
