The Atlanta rapper recently gave birth to her first child and says her daughter brings her a sense of fulfillment, despite experiencing moments of depression shortly after the birth.
Latto is enjoying motherhood while reflecting on the moments when postpartum forced her to rethink things.
In her first interview since giving birth, the Atlanta rapper told Apple Music's Nadeska Alexis how the thought of leaving her career made her realize that postpartum depression is a serious issue.
«"It definitely wasn't my best day," Latto admitted around the 15-minute mark. "Especially considering it was my first time postpartum. You never know what to expect. I kind of underestimated it.".
Latto attributed this to being overwhelmed with preparations for her album "Big Mama." In reality, the Atlanta rapper's statement concealed the fact that her fourth studio album on her longtime label, RCA Records, is the last under her contract, and she will soon be a free agent. Even with this admission, Latto didn't completely say goodbye to rap, as she did in one of her last pregnancy videos. .
«"I wouldn't say I'm retiring today," she said. "Talk to me again next week, and I might say, 'No, that was real.' So, I don't know. I'm going through it. I'm a wreck. It is what it is.".
According to the Cleveland Clinic, postpartum depression is a type of depression that occurs after childbirth and affects up to 1 in 7 women. Symptoms include "emotional ups and downs, frequent crying, or feelings of worthlessness.".
Latto says having her daughter allowed her to focus even more on self-care, and that there was no way to avoid this stage of labor.
«"I can confidently say that no amount of money, help, or anything else can prevent postpartum depression," she said. "It's simply inevitable. And I think thanks to the help I'm doing well. But there are bad days, too.".
After apologizing to fans and retracting her tweet in which she stated she would not use social media during depressive episodes, Latto revealed that while she is grateful for the opportunity to be a first-time mother, she has no plans to slow down in her career and that her daughter will be by her side every step of the way.
«"I don't want to put all my worries aside just because I'm a mom now," she said confidently. "I need to continue taking care of myself if I want to be there for her. That's what makes me happy. That's what keeps her alive... I have to continue this journey for as long as I want. I've rediscovered my passion for music, so I'm not going to stop.".
