Vera Farmiga brought her new role to life in real life.
The 52-year-old Oscar nominee stars in the film festival's premiere film,« The Leader, which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival. She plays Bonnie Lou Nettles, the founder of Heaven's Gate, one of the most infamous cults in American history. For Farmiga, the role was destined for her.
During the pandemic, Farmiga watched the HBO documentary "« Heaven's Gate: Cult of Cults» , which chronicled the disturbing and mysterious events that culminated in the largest mass suicide in US history.
«"I fell right into Bonnie Lou's gravitational pull," she recalls. "She simply captivated me with her gaze. It was impossible to look away from her, and that, frankly, was one of her superpowers. She had that look in her eyes that, when someone looks at you like that, it's the kind of look that makes you immediately start confessing to things you haven't even done yet.".
Farmiga says she became "obsessed" with the controversial figure and tasked her management team with scouting out any scripts related to Heaven's Gate. Nearly six years later, she stumbled upon a project by screenwriter and director Michael Gallagher.

«Maybe I’m just destined to play people with strong opinions,» she says, referring to Nettles and the real-life figure she’s best known for: paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren from the franchise. «The Conjuring» .
«"Some actors get the roles of detectives, but I get the roles of mystics," she jokes. "I don't know. I guess their spiritual authority really attracts me.".
«"I think I'm always drawn to projects that explore people not only as emotional and psychological beings, but also as spiritual beings," she adds. "Stories that explore the spiritual aspects of characters are rare. Most stories focus on external conflicts or psychology, and far fewer ask deeper questions about their purpose, soul, or faith, and I'm thrilled when I come across something like that.".
Regarding the challenge of portraying a controversial figure like Nettles, Farmiga says, "My challenge is not to make her seem like a villain.".
«"She's not a villain, but she's helping people move toward something destructive," she explains. "And so for me, it becomes more of a deep dive into her beliefs and delusions, and what happens to a woman when she stops questioning the voices of others. I mean, I believe that deep down, she was simply searching for meaning in life.".

Farmiga continues: "She went from being a nurse to being this incredibly sensible person, a wife, a mother, a nurse from Texas. She was deeply involved in caring for people, in medicine, in science, in helping patients physically heal. And sometime in the '70s, she decided to transform herself from a nurse into a prophetess. I don't think it was ego-driven, but I honestly think it was driven by a desperate need to be significant.".
«"The key was to focus on her calm, because that's what struck me so much," she concludes. "The quieter she is, the more power she seems to possess when I watch her in this documentary. And that's what's so special about her—she just radiated confidence. She didn't need to convince anyone. She didn't need to convince herself.".
