Replacing the plastic and glass fairing on a Suzuki RF-400

The Suzuki RF-400 sport-tourer was created as a response to the Kawasaki Zizer, which immediately became popular.

The Suzuki RF-400's big advantage is its full-size frame, borrowed from the larger 600cc model. This ensures a comfortable ride, even for larger riders. To make the bike more accessible, a steel diagonal frame was used—strong, cheap, and efficient. However, the weight is hefty: 186 kg dry, and the bike will tip the scales at 200 kg when fully loaded. The RF-400's sporty edge—its inline-four, borrowed from the GXXer—allows it to reach speeds exceeding 200 km/h (124 mph), though that's more for extreme riders. Excessive speeds are hampered by the brakes, the heavy weight, and the fuel consumption.

The Suzuki's ride comfort is excellent. The seat is soft and comfortable, the riding position is more upright than on a pure sportbike, and when you pick up speed, you can hide behind the RF-400's windshield. It's made of durable polycarbonate and quite large, so wind is no problem on the road.

The RF-400's plastic bodywork lends the motorcycle its unique appearance. Its impressive dimensions evoke associations with larger-displacement motorcycles. The distinctive radiator vents make the bike instantly recognizable. However, any sport-touring motorcycle is not immune to falls, cracks, chips, and other accidents.

There are three options in this case:

  • Replace with original plastic. This would be the best option if it weren't so expensive. Besides, the older the motorcycle, the harder it is to find spare parts.
  • Replace it with a cheaper alternative. It's rare for a Chinese manufacturer to not include a full set of spare parts on a bike. Compatibility and availability are advantages, but the quality certainly doesn't measure up to Japanese standards.
  • Repair. This option is for those who enjoy doing their own thing. Besides, if the plastic is only slightly worn, it's cheaper to polish it or cover it with a sticker than to replace it.

For repairs, DIYers use fiberglass bonding soaked in epoxy resin, a professional heat gun, and even a soldering iron. Clouding and minor damage are buffed out with special polishing compounds, preferably matching the color of the body kit. To prevent clouding, wipe the RF-400 fairing glass with specialized motorcycle shampoos.

With careful driving and proper maintenance, repairs or replacement may not be required for a long time.
