Sequels remain all the rage in Hollywood, as major studios are working on new franchises and reviving old ones. More than a dozen different sequels, from "Mario" to "The Mandalorian," are planned for 2026 alone, and the list is only set to grow as we look into 2027.
Next year, major franchises from Disney, Marvel Studios, and DC are expected to return, not to mention new sequels and successors to blockbusters.

Ice Age: Boiling Point
«Ice Age: Boiling Point is the sixth installment in the Ice Age franchise, but the first since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox and its subsidiaries. The new animated film, set in prehistoric times, is scheduled for release on February 5, 2027. In it, beloved characters like Manny, Ellie, Sid, and Diego are transported to a mysterious new world and confront fiery threats to their frozen home. Teasers also confirmed the return of Scrat and his adorable new companion, Baby Scrat.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4
Paramount Pictures' video game franchise will continue in 2027 with Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
Sonic 4, which continues the story of the lightning-fast blue hedgehog Sonic and his friends Tails and Knuckles, is scheduled for release on March 19, 2027. Kristen Bell will join the cast in the fourth film as the voice of Amy Rose, the hammer-wielding pink hedgehog whose appearance was announced at the end of Sonic 3. She will team up with Sonic and his friends to face a new threat: Metal Sonic.
Godzilla and Kong: Supernova
The next chapter of the Monsterverse will debut on March 26, 2027, when Godzilla & Kong: Supernova hits theaters. The new monster movie will feature the return of Dan Stevens as Trapper, and new additions to the cast include Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O'Connell, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Matthew Modine, and Delroy Lindo.
Everyone is eagerly awaiting what catastrophic threat Godzilla and King Kong will face next, as the last film saw them team up against King Scar and Shimo.
Spaceballs: The New Movie
Forty years after the original, a sequel, Spaceballs: The New World, is released. This Star Wars parody features Mel Brooks, Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, George Wyner, and Daphne Zuniga reprising their roles, with Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman joining the cast.
Spaceballs: The New Movie will continue the style and humor of the first film, with a script written by Brooks, Josh Gad, and Dan Hernandez, and a release date set for April 23, 2027.
The Resurrection of Christ: Parts One and Two
Mel Gibson returns with two sequels to his biblical drama The Passion of the Christ, titled The Resurrection of the Christ. The two-part story will be released on March 26 and May 7, 2027. The films will tell the story of the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the events surrounding his return. Starring Jaakko Ohtonen as Jesus and Mariela Garriga as Mary Magdalene.
Paranormal Activity 8
The eighth film in the Paranormal Activity series, from producers Jason Wang, Oren Peli, and Jason Blum, is scheduled for release on May 21, 2027. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the film will be directed by Ian Tuason, who directed the 2025 audio horror film Underground.
How to Train Your Dragon 2
Universal Pictures continues to develop live-action adaptations of classic animated films, following the success of How to Train Your Dragon, which is set for release in 2025.
The second film, which will feature Dean DeBlois again as director and Mason Thames and Nico Parker as Hiccup and Astrid, will be a faithful adaptation of the DreamWorks animated film, following the adventures of Hiccup and his friends beyond Berk, where they meet his long-lost mother, Valka (again played by Cate Blanchett). Filming for the sequel recently wrapped and it is scheduled for release on June 11, 2027.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse
One of the most anticipated Marvel films is the third and final installment of the trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Sony Animation's Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse directly continues the story of Into the Spider-Verse, in which Miles Morales finds himself in an alternate universe where his version has become the Prowler. Meanwhile, the Spider-Men begin a race to find and stop Miles, and Gwen and her team try to track him down.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is already looking stunning in trailers, and audiences will be able to see it in all its animated glory on June 18, 2027.
Shrek 5
After celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2026, the Shrek franchise will continue with a new sequel in 2027. Shrek 5 will be released on June 30, 2027, and will take place several years after the events of Shrek Forever After, when Shrek and Fiona's children are grown. Zendaya, Marcello Hernandez, and Skyler Gisondo will voice the couple's children: Felicia, Fergus, and Farkle.
Man of Tomorrow
«Man of Tomorrow (aka Superman 2) is arguably the most anticipated DC film to date, as James Gunn's superhero film combines David Corenswet's Superman with other DC heroes like Millie Alcock's Supergirl and Aaron Pierre's Star-Lantern John Stewart.
In the sequel, Superman will have to turn to his arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), to face a new threat in the form of classic comic book villain, Brainiac (Lars Eidinger).
Minecraft sequel
Following the resounding success of Minecraft: The Movie, it's no surprise that the studio quickly launched production on a sequel based on the popular game. In Minecraft: The Sequel, Jack Black returns as Steve, and Kirsten Dunst joins the second film as Alex, embarking on a new adventure in the Overworld.
A Quiet Place. Part III
Production has finally begun on the third film, "A Quiet Place," directed by John Krasinski. The film will continue the story of the Abbott family, led by Evelyn (Emily Blunt) and her two children, Regan (Millicent Simmonds) and Marcus (Noah Jupe). Cillian Murphy will also reprise his role as Emmett, another survivor.
After the revelation in A Quiet Place 2 that the sound-hunting aliens couldn't swim, the family took refuge on a small island, but even there wasn't completely safe. A Quiet Place 3 will reportedly be the final installment in the trilogy, concluding the Abbott family's story on July 30, 2027.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem Sequel«
The 2023 animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mayhem was a breath of fresh air for the classic comic book characters, and it will become a standalone franchise with a sequel in 2027.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film is currently untitled, but its premiere is scheduled for August 13, 2027. The sequel will see the same voice actors return to their roles as the turtle brothers: Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello, who will battle their arch-nemesis, the Shredder.
A sequel to The Simpsons movie«
In 2027, The Simpsons will return to the big screen with the long-awaited sequel, The Simpsons Movie. The premiere of The Simpsons Movie 2 is scheduled for September 3, 2027. In the film, the classic cartoon family will embark on a new comedic adventure, although plot details are currently being kept under wraps.
Batman Part II
After a five-year wait, Robert Pattinson's Batman will return on October 1, 2027, in Batman: Part II. Matt Reeves will once again direct the new Batman film. Set in Gotham City during winter, the cast will include Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson, who will reportedly play Harvey and Gilda Dent. Batman: Part II will continue to forge a path for a different kind of Batman film, existing outside the canon of the new DC Universe.
The Mummy 4
The fourth Mummy film, starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, is officially coming 17 years after the previous installment. The sequel, titled "Ready Or Not," will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. The film is expected to be a direct sequel to the first two installments, but will likely not take into account the events of 2008's "Tomb of the Dragon Emperor." The film is scheduled to premiere on October 15, 2027.
Frozen 3
The third film in Disney's biggest animated franchise of this century is scheduled for release on November 24, 2027. Frozen 3 will continue the story of princesses and sisters Anna (Kristen Bell) and Elsa (Idina Menzel) as they try to bring peace to Arendelle. While it's too early to talk about the plot of Frozen 3, it will be a direct sequel to the previous two films.
Avengers: Secret Wars
Everything in Marvel Studios' multiverse saga is leading up to December 17, 2027, when Avengers: Secret Wars (a direct sequel to Avengers: Doomsday) concludes the MCU's final film saga. The plot of Avengers: Secret Wars will become clearer after the release of Doomsday in December, but many MCU stars, including Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Pedro Pascal (Mr. Fantastic), and Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), are preparing for their return to the MCU, as production on the Avengers film is scheduled to begin this summer.
The Maid's Secret
Coinciding with the release of Avengers: Secret Wars is the sequel to The Handmaid, The Handmaid's Secret. The sequel is an adaptation of the second book in the series by Frieda McFadden, with Sydney Sweeney returning as Millie, and Paul Feig returning to the director's chair.

Air Bud return
The long-running Air Bud franchise, which follows a sports-loving golden retriever named Buddy, returns with its 15th installment on January 22, 2027. In Air Bud Returns, Buddy is under the new leadership of 12-year-old Jacob, who teams up with local kids from Fernfield, Washington, to form a basketball team.
La Llorona's Revenge
The 2019 film "The Curse of La Llorana" will be the next installment in the "Conjuring" universe, with a sequel, "The Revenge of La Llorana." The film is based on Latin American folklore about the vengeful ghost La Llorana. Little is known about the plot, but Mónica Raimund, Jay Hernández, and Raymond Cruz will star, and the film is scheduled for release on April 9, 2027.
Beekeeper 2
Jason Statham's seasoned hitman returns in the sequel, "The Beekeeper 2," set for release on January 15, 2027. The film will be directed by Timo Tjahanto, known for his work on "Nobody 2." In the first film, Statham's hitman, known as "The Beekeeper," came out of retirement to stop a dangerous phishing scam. Little is known about the plot of "The Beekeeper 2," although Tjahanto hinted in an interview with The Direct that «"The villain element will be very unpredictable and colorful.".
Gremlins 3
Following "The Mummy 4," comes another sequel, this time to the classic horror franchise of the 80s and 90s, "Gremlins." The films follow the mogwai creatures, who initially appear as adorable furry friends but transform into chaotic monsters if any one of three rules is broken.
Gremlins 3 will be directed by Chris Columbus, with filming expected to begin in the summer of 2027. The film is scheduled to premiere on November 19, 2027.
