Is the future of climate resilience beneath our feet?

We often look to the skies for solutions to climate change. We discuss carbon markets, map wind patterns, and calculate atmospheric emissions. However, one of the most revolutionary and complex solutions to climate change available to us isn't created in a lab—it's in the living soil right beneath our feet.

For too long, humanity has treated soil like dirt: an inert and seemingly inexhaustible resource to be mercilessly plowed, sprayed, or paved over. It's often overlooked that soil is a vital resource for humanity. A handful of healthy soil contains more living organisms than there are people on the planet. We depend on it for nearly all our food, for climate stability, and for preventing most of the world's rainwater from running back into the sea.

World Environment Day is the perfect time to celebrate the role of soil and acknowledge that land health is inextricably linked to the fight against climate change.

Soil as climate armor

Healthy soil is one of our strongest defenses against climate change, natural resource loss and pollution.

Living soil is far from just "dirt." It's an incredible carbon sink, storing nearly twice as much carbon as the atmosphere. With proper care, it can store even more, making soil one of our most powerful allies in the fight against the climate crisis.

However, soil degradation releases carbon back into the atmosphere, worsening the climate crisis.

Soil erosion occurs 100 times faster than it is formed. About a third of the world's soils have already been degraded, although the scale of the problem may be underestimated due to the intensive use of fertilizers.

In addition to absorbing emissions, healthy soil acts as a buffer against climate change through adaptation and resilience. A landscape rich in organic matter functions like a living sponge. It absorbs heavy rains, mitigating devastating floods. It also retains moisture, protecting communities from prolonged droughts—vital for human safety as temperatures rise.

When soil loses its structural integrity, massive amounts of nutrients and chemical fertilizers are released into our waterways and the sea. This pollution fuels catastrophic Sargassum blooms, which could choke tourism in the Caribbean and along its coasts and expand marine dead zones.

Achieving true climate resilience requires recognizing the profound interconnections between the health of people, animals and the environment.

Transition from exhaustion to regeneration

To heal our soil, we must transform our food systems and adopt environmentally friendly farming practices.

By restoring soil life, reducing unnecessary chemical treatments, and reintroducing animals into well-managed mixed farming systems, we can restore the land's fertility. Fields once considered lifeless surfaces can once again become living systems—accumulating carbon, retaining water, and producing food in harmony with nature.

The transition to environmentally friendly alternatives is both necessary and increasingly feasible. Practices such as agroforestry, cover crops, and diversified crop rotations provide a solid foundation for more sustainable food systems. This requires supportive policies, targeted investments, and support for farmers to overcome the short-term costs of the transition. With the right measures, these approaches can deliver long-term benefits in terms of productivity, ecosystem health, and sustainability.

Economic and social imperative

Soil protection is not a niche environmental luxury, but a crucial investment in global macroeconomic stability. Land degradation is a hidden factor driving rising food prices, market volatility, and severe instability in supply chains. When ecosystems are fragmented, this threatens food and water security, directly impacting population migration and geopolitical stability. Moreover, the benefits of land restoration accrue most to rural populations, smallholder farmers, and nomadic pastoralists: precisely those communities most vulnerable to climate shocks.

To build a sustainable future, we must learn from indigenous peoples, whose traditional care for nature reminds us that humanity thrives when it operates within, not beyond, natural boundaries.

For the future health of humanity, soil must transform from an undervalued commodity into a strategically important global resource. Governments must lead the way in integrating holistic soil health and land restoration as a central element of food systems transformation. This should be included in national action plans for climate change adaptation and biodiversity conservation to ensure clear policy coherence. At the same time, the private sector can contribute by redesigning global supply chains and actively promoting and funding agricultural practices that protect ecosystems rather than destroy them for short-term gain. Ultimately, this is about recognizing a simple truth: we are part of nature, not separate from it. The health of our soil underpins the health of our food, our animals, our ecosystems, and ourselves. By restoring the earth beneath us, we begin to restore this balance. In doing so, we move closer to a future shaped not by depletion, but by regeneration—a future grounded in sustainability and compassion.
