Scientists say New Orleans may have to move—here are the more likely options.

Scientists warn that New Orleans could become an island by 2070 and that relocation of its population may be necessary if sea levels rise to projected levels.

Louisiana is known for its low-lying terrain, so it's no surprise that New Orleans, a city of approximately 360,000 people, is vulnerable to sea level rise. The marshes surrounding the city serve as a buffer against hurricanes and storm surges, but they are also disappearing, and their continued loss could increase the risk of flooding.

Experts from institutions including Tulane University, Yale University, Florida State University and Coastal Carolina University projected in a study published in May that the city could lose 75 percent of its wetlands by 2070, becoming surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico, if sea levels rise 3 meters (9.8 feet), which many scientists believe is possible.

However, if sea levels rise by 7 meters (23 feet)—a prediction some scientists believe could occur much later—experts stated that no coastal defenses would be effective enough to protect the city. The region has "passed the point of no return," the authors wrote.

Will New Orleans have to move?

What could be done instead?

Experts say there are a number of alternatives to relocating all of New Orleans, particularly in terms of adapting the city to future environmental challenges.

Brody said he would "recommend that decision makers prioritize creating a resilient city that can adapt to future environmental changes, such as sea level rise and land subsidence, rather than abandoning one of America's largest cities entirely.".

Hino stated that a combination of "engineering approaches, non-structural approaches (such as insurance, evacuation planning, building codes), and, yes, land use change in some areas from residential to non-residential could be used." Peng said some specific priorities the city could take include a smart approach to "zoning and permitting.".
