The team behind Shrinking talks about Easter eggs in Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones and the time jump in Season 4.

You don't need therapy to understand why Harrison Ford received some of the best reviews of his career for his role as Dr. Paul Rhodes in in the film "Downsizing"« .

But the final season offered an even more unexpected surprise from the Hollywood icon: an opportunity to experiment. Historically, Ford has been reticent to discuss his past work or draw attention to his status as the man behind two beloved pop culture characters, Indiana Jones and Han Solo. However, in season three «"Reductions »"The reference to the archaeologist with a whip was heard not once, but twice.

In one scene, Paul returns to rehearsal, humming the Indiana Jones theme song, and announces, "The Greatest is back." It turns out the musical accompaniment wasn't exactly planned in advance.

Ahead of the livestreamed read-through of the Emmy season finale at the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Theatre, the cast and crew gathered to discuss their work and future plans. There, Jason Segel, who plays grief-stricken therapist Jimmy Laird, revealed that Ford claimed he didn't realize he was bringing his classic character's motif into this world. "He apparently didn't know the Indiana Jones theme song was the Indiana Jones theme song," Segel said. "We had him walk into the scene and go, 'Boom!' And then he asked, 'What was that?'"«

However, after the scene was filmed, Ford helped ensure the unexpected moment made it into the final cut. "I never asked Harrison to do anything," jokes creator and showrunner Bill Lawrence. "He did it himself. But he got permission to use [the music] after he filmed the scene because he did it without asking anyone.".

However, Lawrence did sneak one more Indiana Jones reference into the season. When Paul returns to express his long-buried gratitude to Jimmy and give him a second chance with Sophie (Cobie Smulders), he gives Jimmy a choice: go home and be alone, or risk new (emotional) scars. "Choose wisely," he advises Jimmy with a wink.

Fans of the film «Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade» They recognize the quote from the scene where Indy must choose the Holy Grail from a multitude of counterfeits. Ford, however, didn't realize the meta-joke he was making. "When he realized it, he got a little mad at me," Lawrence adds.

Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images</p><p> Another highlight from Ford&#039;s season 3 performance was Segel and Michael Urie, who played Jimmy&#039;s best friend, Brian. While riding in the car with Paul, they began singing &quot;The Stand&quot; from <em>«Les Miserables»</em> , with Oury playing Javert and Seguel playing Jean Valjean. Seguel is known for his love of this musical number and regularly performs it—the most famous instance being during an earlier interview with Neil Patrick Harris.</p><p> As Segel explains, &quot;That&#039;s one of my favorite things to do—that confrontation. I can play both roles. I&#039;ve been doing it since high school, and I fucking love it. It&#039;s the best. Bill knew that and just said, &#039;Okay, we&#039;ll use that. We&#039;re behind on the scripts. Let these guys sing.&#039;&quot; <em>„&quot;Les Miserables&quot;.</em> Urie, a Broadway veteran, adds that the experience was unforgettable: «Playing Javert, alongside Jason Segel, and in front of an audience with Harrison Ford—we were thrilled.».</p><p> It&#039;s Ford&#039;s reaction that makes this scene work: Paul experiences confusion, joy, elation, and anxiety in a matter of moments. &quot;He&#039;s so good,&quot; Urie marvels. &quot;You watch him in that scene and you realize why he&#039;s a movie star, because he has no lines, and he&#039;s the most interesting part of the scene. He experiences every human emotion. He&#039;s confused. He&#039;s excited. He&#039;s sad. He&#039;s afraid we&#039;re going to crash. He&#039;s ecstatic. He&#039;s funny.&quot;.</p><p> The series also features plenty of meta moments involving Urie. Brian and his husband, Charlie (Devin Kawaoka), have become parents to a baby girl named Sutton, after Broadway star Sutton Foster. Since Urie began sharing the stage with Foster—starring alongside her in a revival of« <em>Once Upon a Mattress&quot;»</em> — He used every opportunity to share details about the child&#039;s real namesake.</p><p> «&quot;There&#039;s a table with props on set, and it says something like &#039;Sutton&#039;s Pacifier&#039; or &#039;Sutton&#039;s Bib,&#039;&quot; Urie explains. &quot;Or the schedule might say time for Sutton&#039;s hair and makeup. I take a picture every time and send it to Sutton. I&#039;m so happy it&#039;s her.&quot;.</p><p> While much of the evening was dedicated to celebrating the best moments of Season 3, the team <em>Shrinking</em> is also eagerly awaiting the upcoming fourth season. The series was originally planned to run for only three seasons, so this finale was intended to be the series&#039; conclusion. From a narrative standpoint, it would have been perfect.</p><p> «&quot;We were close to a satisfying conclusion to the storyline,&quot; says showrunner Neil Goldman, &quot;both in terms of the developments throughout the season and in terms of the conclusion of the three-season story that Bill had laid out.&quot;.</p><p> But the team decided to return—and Lawrence has already hinted that Season 4 will feature a two-year jump. Goldman notes that this leap will be significant: &quot;It&#039;s definitely going to be one of those time jumps that feels like a time jump. Each of the characters has made significant strides in those two years, and in some cases, suffered significant setbacks. At the beginning of Season 4, Jimmy, for the first time, is perhaps in the best position of all of them. Jimmy will be seen in a new light, given that he&#039;s never fully recovered from what he&#039;s been through, but he&#039;s recovered enough to move on.&quot;.</p><p> Of course, that doesn&#039;t mean everything will go exactly as Jimmy hopes or expects. Segel notes that life rarely moves in a straight line, saying, &quot;We were trying to come up with a new storyline, and one of the things we encountered was that deciding, &#039;Okay, I&#039;m ready to be happy,&#039; doesn&#039;t mean everything is going to be easy. Sometimes you think, &#039;Okay, I&#039;m ready. I&#039;m going to try. One tradition that was expected to continue was giving Liz (Christa Miller) rocks as a sign of admiration and approval. Miller even recently gave a rock to Elmo from "« Sesame Street »", playing on her character's hobbies and Elmo's famously complex relationship with his nemesis Rocco.

«"We've only just started filming, and this question has already come up," Miller jokes. "It's just a hint. It was already dropped in the first episode.".

After a tumultuous season, Gabi (Jessica Williams) also ended it on a positive note by proposing to "the other" Derrick (Damon Waynes Jr.). Does the time jump mean viewers will miss the wedding altogether?

«"I try to distance myself from it because when I'm like, 'Oh, I want this to happen and it doesn't,' it's not as fun," Williams says. "You're trying to control something that's out of your control. It's a show that runs on its own, and I play a small role, but I just want her to be happy because I really care about her. But, you know, conflict drives plot.".

Like Jimmy, Sean (Luke Tenney) is also moving forward, finally moving out of Jimmy's pool house.

«"I hope he succeeds," Tenney muses. "I want him to be challenged. I'd really like to see him maintain his relationship with Jimmy. Now that they're no longer therapist and client, the only option is friendship. What does that look like? Sean playing pickleball with Jimmy? Jimmy training at the MMA gym with Sean? I want to see that.".

The audience wants it too. But first we need to decide whether it will be received. the TV series "Downsizing"« any Emmy nominations or wins for this season, which brought tremendous growth and healing to all of its characters.
