"People can't deny it for the sake of clicks or headlines. I was invited to sing this anthem on my own initiative, as I've done in many other places throughout my career.".

In her defense, Wilkins noted that the performance was free and not funded by taxpayers.
She also claimed that the 250th anniversary celebrations were organised through a "fundraising arm" and criticised freelance journalist Sarah Higdon for implying otherwise in her comments.
Wilkins continued, declaring that she will no longer remain silent in the face of comments that belittle the hard work she has put into building her career.

Earlier this month, Wilkins filed a lawsuit against MS NOW and two of its reporters, Ken Dilanian and Carol Leonnig.
She accused them of relying on "bogus" anonymous sources to publish "knowingly or recklessly false allegations" against her, NBC News reported.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Nashville, also alleged the station falsely reported that Wilkins had federal agents escort a drunken friend home after a "party.".
Her lawyers argued that security "didn't even exist at the time" and insisted the report also falsely portrayed Wilkins as intoxicated, despite the fact that "she doesn't drink.".
The lawsuit also said the allegations were "grossly offensive" and damaged her reputation as a "responsible, sober young woman.".
Alexis Wilkins is demanding more than $75,000.
In another section of the lawsuit, Wilkins' lawyers argued that MS NOW's alleged false statements constituted more than just defamation of character.
They claimed that this "directly and immediately resulted in" the singer "suffering humiliation and real damage to her professional reputation, authority and standing in society.".
As part of the lawsuit, Wilkins is seeking a jury trial and more than $75,000 in damages.
Since the lawsuit was filed, MS NOW has refused to retract the disputed statements and appears prepared to defend its reporting in court if the case goes to trial.
