Deep in the shrinking rainforests of West Africa lives a crocodile that's nothing like the lumbering, log-like reptile most people imagine. It climbs trees, hides under overhanging branches, and moves so silently through forest streams that scientists still struggle to count how many remain. This is the West African slender-snouted crocodile, and its story is not only one of survival in an extremely challenging environment, but also the story of an animal that continues to amaze researchers attempting to study it.
Meet the crocodile who defies all expectations.
The West African slender-snouted crocodile, scientifically known as Mecistops cataphractus, is one of Africa's five crocodile species and perhaps the least studied. It's barely mentioned in conservation campaigns. For many years, researchers didn't even have enough data to properly assess its level of extinction risk.

A team of researchers traced early reports of the reptiles' tree-climbing abilities back to 1972, when it was briefly noted that baby crocodiles could climb bushes, trees, and even reeds, like chameleons. Only a formal study by University of Tennessee researcher Vladimir Dints transformed these scattered anecdotes into recognized scientific data.

The team identified four species capable of climbing trees, with one crocodile observed 4 meters above the ground. The West African slender-snouted crocodile fits perfectly into this same climbing tradition, using branches similar to how other species use riverbanks.
Why climb at all?
This behavior is neither random nor clumsy. Researchers noted that climbing a steep hill or a vertical branch is mechanically similar, provided the branch is wide enough to walk on. In forested sections of rivers, where flat, sunny banks are rare, a fallen branch or leaning trunk becomes the only available spot for sunbathing.
Scientists believe this provides a dual benefit. They believe crocodiles climb to the top to monitor their territory and bask in the sun. This habit also has a defensive advantage, as the crocodiles were shy and would flee from the perch if observers approached too closely. In other words, the perch serves both as a sunbathing spot and as an early warning system, allowing the animal to instantly dive into the water and disappear as soon as danger arises.
Life built around hidden forest rivers.
Unlike the image of crocodiles most people associate with a sun-baked, open river, this species thrives in shade and thickets. It prefers dense vegetation and overhanging branches along riverbanks, where it can remain camouflaged, making it extremely difficult to count, track, or study. This stealth is a survival strategy, but it has also made collecting basic population data excruciatingly difficult.
Their choice of shelter is even linked to their feeding strategy. They lack open areas to bask in the sun, so they use rocks, as they protrude from the water, as do the branches of fallen trees. They also like to hide under vegetation overhanging the river, because when the fruits growing on the overhanging trees fall into the water, they attract fish, which the crocodiles then prey on. Researchers now consider this a multi-layered use of the forest, obtaining warmth from the tree canopies, shelter from the branches, and food from the connection between the fruits and fish below.
A population balancing on the brink
The species' population is staggering. It is estimated that fewer than 500 adult West African slender-snouted crocodiles remain in the wild. This rarity has earned it a notorious reputation, as it is not only one of the six priority crocodile species for global conservation and the most vulnerable crocodile species on the African continent, but also one of the most endangered species on the planet.
Population declines have already led to the species' extinction in some parts of its historical range. By 2000, significant population declines were recorded in Liberia and Nigeria, and probable extinction was also reported in Gambia, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, and Togo. Field studies conducted in recent years have only confirmed the vulnerability of the remaining populations: surveys of both protected and unprotected areas have shown that this slender-snouted crocodile is no longer present in unprotected areas where it once lived.
Forests are being cut down faster than conservation measures can keep up.
Habitat loss is at the core of the crisis. The West African slender-nosed crocodile is threatened by fishing, human impacts, hunting, habitat degradation, and fragmentation throughout its range, and the forests where it lives and thrives are being cleared at a rate exceeding conservation efforts in many countries. Every hectare lost deprives it of sunbathing, hunting cover, and the shaded microclimate on which it depends.
Intensive fishing exacerbates the damage, and these factors are easily overlooked. Crocodiles are regularly caught as bycatch in fishing nets, and unregulated small-scale mining adds another factor that disrupts the integrity of river systems. Both species face extreme habitat loss, overfishing, and the growing threat of artisanal mining. Mining, in particular, tends to reduce water clarity and disrupt fish populations on which crocodiles depend—a domino effect that researchers have directly monitored in places like Taï National Park in Côte d'Ivoire.
An even stranger cousin underground
The slender-snouted crocodile isn't the only West African species pushing the boundaries of what crocodiles are capable of. Its smaller relative, the dwarf crocodile, has demonstrated an even more astonishing adaptation. One population of dwarf crocodiles has made an even more radical shift: some have gone underground, turned orange, switched their diet to bats and cave crickets, and may be on the verge of evolving into an entirely new species.
Physical evidence of these changes is visible in the animals themselves. Researchers studying cave systems in West Africa have discovered crocodiles living in near-total darkness, their skin stained by guano-rich environments—a visible sign that these animals have been there long enough for their biology to change. Genetic studies confirm this, as researcher Matthew Shirley estimates the current population of cave crocodiles to number no more than 100-200 individuals, and recent studies have identified three genetically distinct populations within the dwarf crocodile group as a whole. This is a reminder that West African crocodiles as a group remain full of surprises, even as their habitat shrinks.
The race to save what's left
Conservation organizations are not standing still. Since the early 2010s, conservation efforts for this species have intensified, focusing on captive breeding, reintroduction, and community engagement to address its critically endangered status. A key initiative has been the Mesistops Project, created to coordinate conservation efforts across West Africa, including collaboration with the National Zoo of Abidjan in Côte d'Ivoire on breeding and reintroduction programs. Young individuals raised in captivity are given a head start before release, which is intended to increase their chances of survival during the most vulnerable early years of life.
On the ground, this work relies on dedicated research scientists tracking individual animals in the species' last remaining pristine habitats. In Tai National Park, researcher Christine Kooman tagged dozens of crocodiles to understand how they use the river system and came to the simple conclusion that Tai is a haven for slender-snouted crocodiles, and if they want to thrive, the forest must be preserved in its current, well-protected state. However, even in the protected park, changes are noticeable. Kooman noted that water quality has noticeably changed since her research began more than a decade ago—a small but telling sign of mounting pressure even in the best remaining refuge for this species.
What happens next?
The story of this slender-snouted crocodile is a strange combination of resilience and vulnerability. It's an animal ancient enough to predate most mammals, adapted enough to climb trees and thrive in complete darkness, yet fragile enough that just a few hundred individuals could be the only obstacle to its extinction. Its rarity isn't just a curiosity for nature documentaries; it's a worrying sign of the state of West Africa's remaining rainforest rivers.
This crocodile's survival in the coming decades will likely depend on how quickly habitat protection, anti-poaching measures, and captive breeding programs can outpace deforestation and river degradation approaching its last habitats. This species has already disappeared from several countries where it once lived.
