Events in different parts of the world unfold at different speeds. They are influenced by various factors, such as resources, priorities, culture, and politics. While such differences are expected, they are still surprising when trying to construct a chronology. While some parts of the world prospered, others experienced political instability or war. While one country achieved significant scientific or technological breakthroughs, another was still under dictatorship. So, here are several such unrelated events that occurred around the same time but do not seem to belong to the same era.
1. Genghis Khan and King John of England were contemporaries. Khan sacked Beijing (then called Zhongdu) in 1215, the year King John signed the Magna Carta.
After conquering the Western Xia Dynasty, Genghis Khan launched his conquest of the Jin Dynasty in 1211. Due to a tactical error by the Jin army commander, the Mongols committed massacres, slaughtering hundreds of thousands of Jin soldiers. By 1215, the khan had besieged, captured, and sacked the Jin Dynasty capital, Zhongdu (now Beijing), forcing the emperor to abandon the northern half of his empire to the Mongols and move the capital to Kaifeng. The khan's advance continued, and by 1234, the Jin Dynasty had fallen.
Following a war with King Philip of France and a failed attempt to recapture Normandy, King John of England returned to England in October 1214. By then, many of his barons were dissatisfied with the need to raise enormous revenues to support the war with France and with King John's treatment of the nobility. On June 15, 1215, John met with the rebellious barons to sign a peace agreement known as Magna Carta. However, neither the king nor the barons seriously attempted to implement the agreement, leading to the First Barons' War. (1, 2)
2. The first production of Shakespeare's play «Antony and Cleopatra» took place in 1607, the same year that the first American colony was founded in Virginia.
Tragedy by William Shakespeare «Antony and Cleopatra» was first performed at London's Blackfriars Theatre (or Globe) by its troupe, the King's Men, in 1607. The tragedy is based on Thomas North's translation of« Biographies »" by Plutarch. It tells the story of the relationship between Mark Antony and Cleopatra, beginning with the Sicilian revolt and ending with Cleopatra's suicide during the final war of the Roman Republic. The play was first published in First Folio in 1623.
Having received a charter from Queen Elizabeth I of England in 1583, Walter Raleigh set out on an expedition to the Atlantic coast of North America. The land was named Virginia, presumably in honor of Elizabeth's status as the "Virgin Queen," or it may be a reference to the local expression "Wingandacoa." Later, in 1607, the London Company financed the first permanent settlement, founded in May by Christopher Newport. (1, 2)
3. The first long-distance telegram was sent in 1844, the same year that Friedrich Engels met Karl Marx.
After Samuel Morse independently developed the electric telegraph in the United States in 1837, his assistant Alfred Vail developed Morse code, incorporating letters into it. Although Morse sent a telegram on January 11, 1838, over a distance of two miles, a fully functional telegraph was not transmitted until 1844. The first long-distance telegram was sent from the Capitol in Washington to the old Mount Clare station in Baltimore. It contained the message "WHAT GOD HAS MADE.".
German philosopher Friedrich Engels first met Prussian-born philosopher and sociologist Karl Marx at the Café de la Régence on the Place du Palais in Paris on August 28, 1844. Together they founded Marxist theory and co-authored many books, including «The Communist Manifesto» . Engels also provided Marx with financial assistance in research and writing. «Capital» . (1, 2)
4. Nintendo was founded in 1889, the same year Hitler and Charlie Chaplin were born.
Nintendo was founded by Fusajiro Yamauchi on September 23, 1889, as a playing card manufacturer. They sold a card game called hanafuda , and as their handmade cards grew in popularity, they began mass production to meet demand. It wasn't until 1974 that Nintendo entered the video game market, acquiring the rights to distribute the Magnavox Odyssey game console in Japan.
Charlie Chaplin and Adolf Hitler were born four days apart, on April 16 and 20, respectively, the same year Nintendo was founded. Another interesting point is the similarity in appearance between Hitler and Chaplin in his films, particularly their brush moustaches. After Chaplin became increasingly concerned about the rise of militaristic nationalism, he began to boldly express his political views in his films. One such film was «"The Great Dictator"» (1940), in which he played a satirical version of Hitler. (1, 2, 3)
5. Ecstasy was invented in 1912, the same year the ship sank. Titanic liner« and commercial radio was used for the first time.
MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy (E) or 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, is a psychoactive substance used recreationally. It was first produced in 1912 and initially used to enhance psychotherapy. It wasn't until the 1970s and 1980s that it became a street drug, used at parties, raves, and clubs.
On April 15th of the same year that ecstasy was invented, the Titanic liner« , Ironically, one of the most advanced technologies on board the ship at the time was a powerful telegraph transmitter. The radiotelegraph was used by passengers and crew to send telegraph messages and also to send distress signals to nearby vessels.
Meanwhile, several scientists were also working on developing radio receivers, but it wasn't until 1912 that they succeeded in harnessing the amplifying power of the audion. The audion is an electronic amplifying vacuum tube invented by electrical engineer Lee De Forest in 1906. . (1, 2, 3)
6. Martin Luther King and Anne Frank were born in the same year, 1929.
Anne Frank, born June 12, 1929, was a German Holocaust survivor and diarist. Her diary, first published in 1947 as «Het Achterhuis. Dagboekbrieven 14 Juni 1942 – 1 Augustus 1944"» , and later republished in English as «The Diary of a Young Girl» , became one of the most famous documents about the Holocaust. Tragically, Frank died just a few weeks before British soldiers liberated her camp on April 15, 1945. She was survived by her father, who returned to Amsterdam after the war.
Civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, five months before Anne Frank. Four years after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for his use of nonviolence during the civil rights movement to end racial segregation, he was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968. Had Frank and King not died, they would be 88 years old today. (1, 2)
7. Prisoners arrived at Auschwitz just days after McDonald's was founded in 1940.
The Auschwitz concentration camp was a network of concentration and extermination camps built by the Third Reich in the German-occupied Polish city of Oświęcim (now Oswiecim). It comprised three main camps: Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II-Birkenau, and Auschwitz III-Monowitz, as well as 45 subcamps. Following the construction of Auschwitz I in May 1940, Polish political prisoners began arriving. That same month, on the 15th, Richard and Maurice McDonald founded McDonald's in San Bernardino, California, as a barbecue restaurant, which, under the leadership of Ray Kroc, soon became one of the largest restaurant chains in the world. 8. When Microsoft was founded in 1975, Spain was still under fascist dictatorship.
Following the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), Spanish General Francisco Franco ruled Spain as a dictator until his death on November 20, 1975. During the Civil War, Franco allied with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy and staged a coup d'état to overthrow the government. In 1939, he declared himself head of state and established a military dictatorship, transforming Spain into a totalitarian state. Three years after Franco's death, the Spanish Constitution of 1978 came into force, marking the beginning of the country's transition to democracy.
Microsoft was founded on April 4, 1975, by Paul Allen and Bill Gates to develop and sell BASIC interpreters for the Altair 8800 microcomputer, developed by a Mexican electronics company. Following its success, Microsoft quickly became the dominant provider of operating systems and other software. (1, 2)
9. The tragic car accident involving Princess Diana and the death of Mother Teresa occurred within the same week in 1997.
Diana died on August 31, 1997, at the age of 36, in a car accident in a Paris tunnel. The accident occurred when Henri Paul, a driver and acting security manager at the Ritz Hotel in Paris, lost control while driving at high speed and intoxicated. Her partner, Dodi Fayed, whom she was dating at the time, also died in the accident.
Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997, at age 87, the same week as Diana's. She had suffered two heart attacks, and after the second in 1989, she was fitted with a pacemaker. Her health steadily deteriorated, and in 1996, she broke her collarbone in a fall, contracted malaria, and developed heart problems. On March 13, 1997, she resigned as superior of the Missionaries of Charity and died six months later. (1, 2)
10. The last prisoner executed by firing squad in the United States died in 2010, on the same day that Toy Story 3 was released.
Ronnie Lee Gardner was convicted of murder, felony murder, and robbery and sentenced to death in Utah in 2010. On June 15, he was served his last meal: steak, lobster tail, apple pie, vanilla ice cream, and 7-Up. He then fasted for 48 hours while watching the trilogy. «The Lord of the Rings» and reading «Divine Justice» . On June 18, he voluntarily went to the execution site and was shot.
