Our planet Earth is known for its abundance of water. Ninety-seven percent of all water on Earth is found in the oceans. Oceans are large, salty bodies of water that are home to millions of marine organisms and animals. Five oceans cover 71% of Earth's total land area. They play a vital role in all known life, participate in the carbon cycle, and influence climate and weather patterns. Oceanography is the science of the oceans, and oceanographers have divided the oceans into distinct zones based on biological and physical conditions. It is said that we know much more about space than we do about the oceans. Therefore, these vast blue-green bodies of water hide many mysteries. Here are ten little-known facts about the Earth's oceans.
1. Phytoplankton, single-celled plants that live on the ocean's surface, provide half the world's oxygen, not trees.
Phytoplankton, single-celled ocean plants, are at the core of the ocean's biological productivity. Biological productivity is the ability of bodies of water to support life. Phytoplankton use solar energy to convert carbon dioxide into complex organic compounds, which form new plant material. The food chain begins with phytoplankton. 3. The water pressure at the deepest point of the ocean, the Mariana Trench, is over eight tons per square inch (703 kilograms per square meter). This is equivalent to the pressure exerted on you by 50 jumbo jets.

Researchers took a sample from the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, the deepest point in the ocean, located at a depth of 36,201 feet (11,034 meters). The soil there was saturated with single-celled organisms called foraminifera, which are considered the earliest form of life. According to the study, the water pressure in the Challenger Deep is more than eight tons per square inch (703 kilograms per square meter). For comparison, this pressure is equivalent to the pressure of 50 airplanes lying on top of you. 5. The Pacific Ring of Fire is a region in the Pacific Ocean basin that contains 751,000 active and dormant volcanoes worldwide. Additionally, 901,000 earthquakes worldwide occur within the Ring of Fire.

Fish with fangs

The fangfish is one of the deepest-sea fish on the planet. It gets its name from its extremely large teeth, which seem disproportionate to its 15-centimeter body. It lives at depths of over 5,000 meters. The pressure at this depth is 50 times greater than on land.
Vampire squid

The vampire squid, named for its dark, membranous tentacles that can cover its entire body, lives at depths of up to 3,000 meters. Its eye-to-body ratio is the largest of any creature on the planet. Its gelatinous body is six inches long. Furthermore, it can survive in low-oxygen conditions.
Frilled shark

The frilled shark has 300 trident-shaped teeth, neatly arranged in 25 rows. This prehistoric shark species was first discovered between 1879 and 1881. It also inhabits depths of up to 1,570 meters. Its name comes from its frill-like appearance. The gestation period for this shark can last up to three and a half years, the longest of any vertebrate.
7. The Mid-Ocean Ridge, the longest mountain range in the world, is located on the ocean floor and stretches for more than 40,390 miles (65,000 kilometers).

8. Point Nemo in the South Pacific Ocean, located more than 1,600 kilometers from the nearest coast, is so remote that the nearest humans are on the International Space Station at an altitude of 400 kilometers.

Point Nemo is located at 48°52.6′ south latitude and 123°23.6′ west longitude and is considered the most remote point on Earth. Translated from Latin, "nemo" means "no man." It is more than 1,000 miles from the nearest land. The distance to the nearest land is so great that the closest humans to Point Nemo would be at an altitude of 248.5 miles on the International Space Station. 9. When a whale dies, its skeleton falls into the abyssal or bathyal zone of the ocean. This allows a complex local ecosystem of deep-sea organisms to survive for decades. This is called a "whale fall.".

10. The Great White Shark Cafe is an area in the central Pacific Ocean where sharks swim and linger for seemingly no apparent reason. Surprisingly, the sharks come to this spot despite the scarcity of food in the area.
